Manila- The proud Philippine Dragon Boat Team consisting of Manila-based and Boracay players arrived Tuesday from Sydney, Australia where it captured gold medals during the International Dragon Boat Federation's 8th World Dragon Boat Racing Chapionships.
The event was held from September 20-23, 2007.
The RP's team headed by technical director and head coach Nestor Ilagan was welcomed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport by Philippine Sports Commission chairman William 'Butch' Ramirez and his commissioners.
The Pinoy rowers competed against teams from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Slovak Republic and the United States.
The complete medal haul is as follows: 1000m Men's Open: Gold - USA, Silver - Great Britain, Bronze - Philippines; 2000m Men's Open: Gold - USA, Silver - Slovakia, Bronze - Philippines; 200m Men's Open: Gold - Philippines, Silver - China, Bronze - Great Britain; 500m Men's Open: Gold - USA, Silver - Philippines Bronze - Great Britain.
The RP team lead by steerman Ruperto Sabijon and drummer Sujod Hakim also took two bronze medals in the 1,000 meter and 2,000 meter races.
