Boracay Island- Business communities, non-government organizations and residents here have bonded together to protect the shores of Boracay known for its pristine water and powdery white sand.
According to Nenette Aguirre-Graf, president of the Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI) several business establishment and individuals have contributed funds to raised $10,000 for an initial work to conduct a complete analysis of the shores, coral reefs and water surrounding this resort island. The BFI had recently made cooperation with several organizations such as the Boracay Windsport Association, Boracay Association of Scuba diving Schools (BASS), and Boracay Water Sports Association for the fund raising event dubbed as “Boracay Forever, Preserving Our Shores.”
Graf said, to accomplish their goals the cooperator had agreed to hire the services of the Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA) a non-profit organization dedicated to growing, protecting and managing the most threatened of all marine ecosystems – the coral reef.
Founded in 1990, GCRA is a coalition of volunteer scientists, divers, environmentalists and other individuals and organizations, committed to coral reef preservation. The organization is based in
”We primarily focus on coral reef restoration, marine diseases and other issues caused by global climate change, environmental stress and pollution. This challenge comes in response to a request of the cooperators (BFI, BASS, BWA and the BWSA) to support astudy carried out by the GRCA,” Graf said.
Documents obtained by this writer revealed that the fund-raising activity had so far collected P137, 500 in cash and pledges excluding $2,900 from several resorts and businessmen in this resort island.
