KALIBO, Aklan - The primary suspect of killing a farmer in Tubungan, Iloilo and suspected rebel leader Fernando Baldomero calls the charges filed against him by the police as a clear act of harassment.
Baldomero, 58, a neophyte councilor of Lezo town in Aklan, was implicated by the Tubungan Police Station headed by Insp. Efren Niembra in the murder of Arturo Tagudinay of Brgy. Igdampug Sur last July 23.
The 13 others tagged as suspects were Ariston Remus, Camlon Sabares, a certain Alias Ka Alan, Nahum Camariosa, a certain Alias Ka Bebong and 10 unidentified suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Earlier, the Napoleon Tumagtang Command (under Remus) of the Southern Front Committee of NPA, admitted responsibility for Tagudinay’s death accusing him of being a counter-revolutionary and anti-people element.
Remus said Tagudinay was extorting money from candidates in the 2004 elections claiming to be an NPA. They claimed that the victim was also responsible for the killing of barangay councilor Nilbert Camariosa during the canvassing of votes last May 14.Niembra alleged that Baldomero, with a nom de guerre of Ka Gene, along with the several respondents, were responsible for killing Tagudinay on July 11 at around 10:30 a.m. at Lupao Creek in Sitio Ila-Ila in Brgy. Igdampog Sur in Tubungan, Iloilo. However, Baldomero strongly denied the charges.
Baldomero said he is not an NPA member and it is impossible for him to be a part of the murder of Tagudinay since he was busy with his lumber business and his work as municipal councilor.
Baldomero added that he had been implicated in a string of cases when he was arrested by the police and the military in Jaro, Iloilo in 1993. He was jailed for three times already: in Antique for murder of a mayor in San Remigio in 1993, in Guimbal for arson and in Antique again for ambushing a group of soldiers and policeman in 2005.But, all the charges filed against him were dismissed for lack of evidence.
He also disclosed that apart from Tagudinay’s murder case, he was also implicated in another murder case in Guimbal for killing a still unknown person. He said that there is another case of arson filed against him at the Iloilo Prosecutor’s Office.
“Nagapalagpat lang sila file kaso, wala sila kabalo nga ginaguba nila ang pangabuhian sang mga tawo nga wala kahilabtanan sa krimen nga natabu. Madugay na ako nga wala sa NPA kag nagapangabuhi na ako sang matahway diri sa Aklan apang katingalahan nga padayon gihapon nila ako nga ginaupod sa mga kaso nga ina,” Baldomero said in a phone interview.
Baldomero suspects that the charges hurled against him are due to his involvement in a militant party-list group Bayan Muna as Aklan provincial chair, whom the military accuses as a group linked with the communist movement.
He denied the accusations saying it was an old propaganda formulated by the police to harass leaders of their group. He said that after his release from prison in 1995, he had been living in his hometown in Lezo and had been elected as barangay councilor.
“The action of the government against me is a part of their devious plot to harass the leaders of militant and progressive organizations in Panay and in the whole country,” said Baldomero who is confident that he will be cleared of the charges.
