Kalibo, Aklan- Uknown to many, a 13 years old student at the Science National High School in Iloilo City inspired the research of the new bio-fuel taken from animal fats.

The researcher Nadya Patricia Sauza was recently personally recognized by Department of Agriculture secretary Arthur Yap for her research and development and contributions for the bio-fuel production.

According to Nadya's mother Ester Sauza, it all started because her second child is being asked to compete for the annual Investigatory-Elementary Level fair early this year. And with her entry "Bio-diesel waste from animal fats in a meat processing plants.

'The Sauza family maintains a meat processing plant in the province and sells chorizo and tocino in a nationwide scale.

"At first, we do not know what to do with the processed animal fats because it serves as a wastes to us. With the competition, we sought the help of the Aklan State University-Banga on what to do with the said wastes," Ester said.

The Sauza after deliberations and consultations with a team of experts in the ASU, they all came out with a single conclusion that processed animal fats could be used for bio-fuel.

The same conclusion also earned high approval from the Department of Science and Technology-Kalibo.

But the road to success for Nadya is not easy. After having chosen as a regional winner supposedly to represent the Western Visayas for the National Science Quiz Fair organized by the Association of Science Educators of the Philippines (ASEP).

"But the regional organizers sent two representatives in the national fair instead while Nadya should solely represent the region. The national competition only requires one entry representing a region and not two," Ester recalled.

In Manila, the ASEP decided to draw lots for Nadya and another representative and the latter won the drawing of the lots.

It is in this situation that her mother filed a formal complaint to the ASEP questioning why Nadya have been forbidden to join the contest. The controversy erupted reached Yap's office and immediately called the organizers of the said fair and meet with Nadya.

"Nadya then presented her research to Yap which gained his approval. After some months of deliberation the DA decided to fully implement the project and gave a grant of P15 million to pursue the production of the bio-fuel from the processed animal fats," Ester said.

With the said grant, the ASU now also have the exclusive right to ask food chains management in the nationwide level to provide to the university their wasted processed animal fats to be converted into bio-fuel.

"I remember her while she's still seven year's old. She often loves to play as a manager of a certain business and one of her dreams is to have a gas named from her. We do not know that it will become soon a reality," Nadya's mother said.

What's so new about the biodieselfuel from animal fat and/or restaurant-used-cooking oil? In fact 39% of San Francisco (CA) city's diesel fleet is now using biofuel.

Meanwhile ASU "experts" had just come to a unanimous conclusion that processed animal fats could be used for biofuel! Ay-yayay ...

To insure proper engine performance, ASTM had already established standardized spec - the ASTM D6751 - for the industry to strictly adhere when producing biofuel.
