Media briefed on May polls prohibited acts

KALIBO, Aklan – Carrying of guns, transfer and detail of government employees and suspension of local elective officials are prohibited by the Commission on Elections effective January 14 this year, the start of the election period.

This was emphasized by OIC provincial election supervisor Lorena Tumbagaban, when she met the Aklan media recently to clarify matters on the May 2007 polls.

With the gun ban, Tumbagahan said nobody is allowed to carry guns unless a person applies for exemption, if he feels he is highly at risk. She said those applying fo r gun ban exemption could apply at the Comelec.

The gun ban exemption, said Tumbagahan, is contained in an amended 6764 resolution which initially ordered total gun ban.

Detail and transfer of government employees will not be allowed unless with written authority from the Comelec. Also, local elective officials can not be suspended unless the ground for suspension is based on Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Tumbagahan disclosed that Comelec-Aklan will soon come out with the total number of registered voters in the province upon the approval or disapproval of applicants for registration from October to December 2006. (PIA)
